What happens when my pet is overweight?

Excess body fat can negatively affect your pets as they become less active and their essential organs work even harder to function. Overweight pets may develop one or some of these health issues:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Heart disease
  • Urinary bladder stones
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • High blood pressure

What can I do to help control my pet’s weight?

When handling pet’s health prevention is always best. Based on your pet’s breed and age our veterinarians will determine the pet’s ideal weight. To prevent your pets from being overweight a certain lifestyle must be established as it is a lifelong process. Here are some ways on how to prevent and also help overweight pets lose weight:

  • Exercise: This helps your pet burn fat and get to a healthy weight.
  • Diet/ special nutrition: Your veterinarian may recommend adjusting your pet’s meals and providing them with special nutritional products to give them the right amount of nutrients they need. We recommend foods that are high in nutrients, fibre, protein and antioxidants.
  • Schedule meal times: This is recommended over leaving food out as it gives your pet a routine and prevents overeating. As fur parents you are responsible for the calories your pet consumes.

Combining these three tips can help your pet maintain a healthy weight. You can trust our veterinarians to evaluate your pets and keep them at a healthy weight.
